CF Montreal have confirmed the signings of goalkeeper Sebastian Breza and center-back Joaquin Sosa from Serie A side Bologna.
Sosa joins the Eastern Conference side on a loan deal through the 2024 Major League Soccer season. The 22-year-old joined Bologna in August 2022 and has since made 11 appearances for the Italian club.
The former Uruguay youth international spent the last few months of 2023 on loan at Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb, where he managed just three appearances in his four-month spell.
The former Nacional player joins a Montreal defense that contains Joel Waterman, Gabriele Corbo and former Atlanta United defender George Campbell.
Montreal, who are set to begin 2024 under first-year head coach Laurent Courtois, secured Breza’s signature on a permanent move that brings him back to the club for two additional seasons in 2024 and 2025. Breza was previously at Montreal on loan for the 2021 and 2022 seasons, where he suited up 38 times for the Canadian side during their successful 2022 campaign under Wilfried Nancy.
During his first stint in Montreal, Breza kept eight clean sheets and conceded 50 goals as his side went on to win the 2021 Canadian Championship.
The 25-year-old Canada international departs Bologna having not made an appearance at the first-team level and going out on several loans to the likes of Carrarese and Yverdon Sport FC.
With some fresh and familiar faces through the door in Montreal, Courtois will hope to get the Canadian club back on the right track by qualifying for the postseason after the team missed out in 2022 with then-head coach Hernan Losada at the helm.
