Chris Wood: "I’m grateful to Erling Haaland for my successful start to the season"
New Zealand striker Chris Wood has praised Erling Haaland for his impressive start to the season, after notching up two more goals in Nottingham Forest’s 3-1 win over Leicester City on Saturday.
Wood’s two goals without reply in the second half at the King Power Stadium, taking his tally to seven goals in the Premier League this season, with only Manchester City’s Haaland ahead of him with 10.
"I’m just trying to get as many goals as I can," Wood said in an interview with Sky Sports. "He’s an impressive guy, you can follow him. It’s a great start for me and the team."
Haaland, who has been playing for Manchester City, has shown a tendency to conserve his energy and make less ball contacts, which does not necessarily fit into the tactics of City’s coach Pep Guardiola. However, his impressive performances since joining the club in 2022 have changed Guardiola’s approach.
The 24-year-old has won the Golden Shoe in each of his two seasons in England, scoring 74 goals and 13 assists in 73 league appearances. Since three league games, the 32-year-old Wood has scored four goals.
"I just want to keep scoring as many goals as I can," Wood said. "He is an impressive guy, you can follow him. It’s a great start for me and the team."
Wood’s impressive form has seen him become the joint-second highest scorer in the history of the Premier League for Nottingham Forest, behind only Haaland, who has already scored 18 goals this season.
